BUSH WALKING IN THE GREAT SANDY NATIONAL PARK

The Cooloola section of Great Sandy National Park offers walking tracks for all ages and fitness levels. Take a short walk or long hike through northern Cooloola's magnificent landscapes. See spectacular coloured sands and beautiful beaches, walk through blossoming forests to tranquil creeks and lakes. Take your time and make the most of the beauty that surrounds you. Take a walk through Cooloola's wilderness and consider walking one or all of the following tracks:

Carlo Sandblow      -             (600m one way) Start at Rainbow Beach water tower, and follow this track through woodlands to a natural sandblow with extensive views.

Coloured sand cliffs     -        Walk east along the beach from Rainbow Beach township to where spectacular eroded cliff lines expose coloured sands.

Telegraph Track        -        (7km to Bymien)  From Rainbow Beach start at end of Double Island Drive and follow the old telegraph line down to Bymien. Take a side track to Murrawar Lookout (2 km return to the main track) to view Double Is Point, Wide Bay Bar and Fraser island.

Murrawar Lookout      -       (2km one way) Start at end of Double Island Drive. As above.

Dandathu circuit          -    (250m) Start at Bymien picnic area. An easy walk providing an excellent overview of Cooloola's Rainforest. 

Bymien to Poona Lake       -  (2 km one way). Start at the Bymien picnic area. From the Dandathu track, climb a rainforested high dune before descending through carrol (grey myrtle) scrub to tea-coloured waters of this perched lake.

Searys Creek             -         (100m one way) Start at roadside carpark 7.5 km south of Rainbow Beach to reach a sream that flows through heath and low woodland.

Freshwater campground to Freshwater Lake       -       (1.3km one way) Take a short walk through scribbly gum woodland and open forest to Freshwater Lake, flanked with reeds and twisted paperbarks.

Freshwater Lake circuit         -      (2.7km) Enjoy an easy walk around the lake, seeing woodland, open forest and rainforest on the way. Return along the vehicle track to Freshwater Lake.

Freshwater Lake to Bymien        -       (7.3km one way)  Pass through scribbly gums, blackbutt and rainforest. A side track to Poona lake (2 km return to the main track) is through carrol (grey myrtle) understorey.

Double Island Point         -        (1.1 km one way) from Teewah Beach. The track to the lighthouse is steep but the view is fantastic. See marine life from the headland. Imagine how life was for early lighthouse keepers and their families.
